Massimo Perucca, PhD - Diad Group: Nano-Biosensors through self assembly process

Biosensors use selective biological recognition reactions to target a specific analyte. The Nano-Bio Technology Group at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT, China) is working on the development of nano-(bio)sensors for environmental applications targeted to health and safety such as detection of biowarfare and chemical warfare agents for homeland security; measurement of exposure to diesel and gasoline exhausts; detection of compounds such as herbicides, pesticides, toxins, viruses and bacteria in water and food and toxic industrial chemicals in the environment. Bio-sensors are also directly applicable for health care such as analysis of cardiac and cancer markers. Considering their miniaturization nano-biosensors are suitable for forensic analysis where the amount of sample available for analysis can be extremely small. Recently, the HIT nano-bio-techology group led by Zhifei Dai constructed a super-stable and freestanding nanocerasome linked with two J-aggregates of cyanine dyes. Such new nanoparticles are highly fluorescent due to very efficient energy transfer between two dyes so they would have great application potential in fluorescent bioassay. The nanocerasome has been in situ synthesized through a sol-gel self assembly process resulting in a liposomal bilayer membrane, displaying an inorganic silicate framework.
