Dr. Alexander Steinecker, CSEM, Project coordinator

CSEM is the coordinator of Hydromel project, having the technical, administrative and financial repsonsability for a consortium of 24 partners. CSEM is also a key – partner for RTD activities. The company is the scientific advisor/responsible for the technical development of Demonstrator 1 related to packaging of micro sensors and micro grippers (end user: FEMTOTOOLS) and of Demonstrator 3 related to the design of a fully automated cellular microinjection system (end user: BIOPREDIC).

Is it your first experience as a coordinator of such big research IP project? On the European level?

Yes, this is my first project as coordinator. Nevertheless I had the chance to work in other large scale European projects also on a high level before.

You took the responsibility 18 months after the project starts, was it difficult? Or you prefer to be at the beginning?

I was involved in this project already in the proposal phase and tracked the project from the very beginning. The internal transfer was very smooth, therefore taking over the project was not so difficult.

What are the interesting aspects of managing such a big project?

Most interesting is it seeing different partners with different cultures working together, trying to find solutions for the project. It’s also very nice to see results evolving and the project growing.

What are the challenges??? What is difficult?

After the starting phase some partners left the consortium and new entered it. This is a challenge but also a chance as it offers optimizations in the project work.

Is it possible to follow the work of each partner?

Hopefully not only for me, but also for the other partners. We meet regularly (all 3 months) and exchange information between partners. Of course the deep details are the domain of the experts, but in general, it is clear who is doing what.

Do you think that the exploitation seminar held in Paris clarify the situation for the project results obtained by all partners?

The exploitation strategy seminar (ESS) was an excellent event that helped to improve partners’ awareness for their results and the options for exploitation. It was also useful to make the numerous project results more clear and identify contributors.

What are the most promising results according to you?

The real industrial combination of robotics that assists a massive parallel self-alignment process like in the RFID tag assembly is extremely interesting. It involves nearly all research areas in HYDROMEL such as surface treatment for self-alignment, hierarchical or fluidic self-alignment, part feeding.
The exploitation of options for cost-effective assembly of future nano-devices mainly based on nanotubes / nanowires is a second project highlight.

Do you have any recommendation to a future project coordinator?
