MEC focuses on research in intelligent systems, advanced manufacturing, rapid prototyping, robotics, microsystems and metrology. The 80-strong ISO 9001:2000 accredited MEC has been involved in 30 EC projects and is currently the leader of two directly relevant FP6 NoEs I*PROMS (Innovative Production Machines and Systems) and 4M (Multi-Material Micro Manufacture: Technologies and Applications).

Marco Castellani obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2000 from University of Wales, Cardiff with a thesis on intelligent control of manufacturing of fibre optic components. Between 2001 and 2002, he worked for a private company in Germany on machine learning applications to natural language processing. Between 2002 and 2005, he was at New University of Lisbon, where his research included machine learning, machine vision, remote sensing and pattern recognition. Since December 2008 he is Research Fellow at the Manufacturing Engineering Centre of Cardiff University. He is currently involved in the design of machine vision and machine learning algorithms for quality control of the assembly processes of Hydromel demonstrators 1, 2, and 3.

Ming Yang obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1993 from the University of Salford on a subject of Ultrasound linear-array based robotic ranging system. Between 1994 and 1996, he was a Post-Doc Research Fellow at the Dept. of EEE, the University Leeds as a principal researcher working on an EPRC project “High-speed ultrasound tomography for two-phase flow imaging”. From 2007 to now he is a Project Manager working in the area of electronics, sensors and signal processing. He has participated in and managed several EC projects. His main research areas are acoustic transducers, image processing, machine vision, parallel processing, embedded real-time systems and low noise electronics. His role in Hydromel is the development of a quality inspection system for demonstrators.
